Ward Committees

The Helderberg Residents’ Action Association is represented on Wards 83, 84, 85, 100 and 105 in the City of Cape Town.

The function of these Ward Committees, as pertains to ratepayers and residents:
The Ward Committees will make recommendations on any matter affecting the Ward. These recommendations and input will be taken by the Ward Councillor (Chairperson of the Ward Committee) and communicated to Council through the Subcouncils. There is a Subcouncil serving each of the Wards of the City and these Subcouncils will be used to effectively communicate the people’s views and comments.

A Ward Committee as a typical example, can be composed of 10 representatives with the portfolios of Business, Community Safety, Education, Environment, Ratepayers Association, Religious Groupings, Sectional Title Organisations, Senior Citizens, Health and Welfare, Sport and Culture and Woman respectively.

Committee members are nominated to the Ward Committee by their respective organisations and may not be remunerated.

The Ward Committee system does not replace community-based organisations as these bodies function independently in their own right.

So, as you can see, this is a mechanism for you as a community member to bring your concerns to the notice of Council. The Ward Committee system does not replace the function of the Helderberg Residents’ Action Association, but does provide us with a further channel to address the needs of the Helderberg community.
